It started with a Shop product.

Then, it became a web browser.

Then, a $50M Seed Fund.

Now, a phone.

My friend Dan Sullivan, co-founder of Strategic Coach, has an excellent saying I think of at least once per day:

“Keep the main thing the main thing.”

My friends, I fear Perplexity has forgotten the main thing.

They had such an incredible search product. I fear, now, that they’ve gotten so distracted that they’ve lost the plot.

ChatGPT’s search is faster.

Gemini’s Deep Research is better.

** Don’t shoot the messenger ** but I actually stopped using Perplexity in favor of just using ChatGPT’s search.

It’s clear that Perplexity is going after every one of Google’s main business units:

Perplexity Shop / Google Shop Perplexity Comet / Google Chrome Perplexity’s Seed Fund / Google Ventures Perplexity Phone / Google Android

I think it’s such a wonderful company. I hope they can pull this off, but I fear that they might be taking on too much, too fast.

For every Google comes a Yahoo, and for every Search comes a Jeeves.
