AI and Automation: What’s the Difference?
AI is data with a task. It can be a complex task, such as predicting the weather or summarizing your Zoom or Teams meeting, or it can be a simple task such as adding a new customer to your email list or automatically adding an email address to a Salesforce record.
Automation is taking a task that used to be done by a human and giving it to a computer.
Most of the time, our clients only need simple automation.
For example, we had a client spend 90 minutes per month taking data from a PDF and putting it into Excel. This is hardly a task for a complicated AI algorithm. The task was solved by licensing a $20 per month tool, and now that individual has 18 hours back per year.
Is it sexy? No. Is it effective? Yes.
The most important thing is that the job and the task get done faster, easier, and more consistently than they were before. The complexity of the tools used is determined by the complexity of the task being automated.
If the task is not a prediction, then automation is the right tool for the job.
For business owners, who cares? All that matters is that the job gets done.
